I’m often asked about detoxes or cleanses, and whether they are a safe and effective way to eliminate toxins and lose weight.  Let’s break it down:

Toxins—an everyday encounter

Toxins are potentially harmful substances that include pollutants, pesticides, hormones, additives to processed foods, heavy metals in soil and water, allergens, alcohol, and tobacco, just to name a few. They accumulate in the body over time, resulting in weight gain, digestion issues, inflammation, fatigue and chronic disease.

Your body—a natural detoxification machine

Cleanses and detoxes are all over the media right now. But the fact is, our bodies have built-in, well-defined systems for eliminating toxins. The liver, kidneys, large intestine and lymphatic system work together to flush toxins from our bodies. Your body’s natural detoxification system can be inhibited without proper nutrients and hydration. This is why short-term juice or fasting cleanses that rely on severe caloric restriction and nutritional deficiencies do not work.

A food first approach—the best way to detox

Focusing on fueling your body with nutrient-rich foods that boost your immunity is the best way to heighten your body’s detoxification process. Fluids, fiber and phytonutrients from fruits and vegetables are the keys.
