I’m often asked about detoxes or cleanses, and whether they are a safe and effective way to eliminate toxins and lose weight. Let’s break it down:

Toxins are potentially harmful substances that include pollutants, pesticides, hormones, additives to processed foods, heavy metals in soil and water, allergens, alcohol, and tobacco, just to name a few. Cleanses and detoxes are all over the media right now. But the fact is, our bodies have built-in, well-defined systems for eliminating toxins. The liver, kidneys, large intestine and lymphatic system work together to flush toxins from our bodies. Your body’s natural detoxification system can be inhibited without proper nutrients and hydration. This is why short-term juice or fasting cleanses that rely on severe caloric restriction and nutritional deficiencies do not work.
